Walk to End Lupus Now – Rescheduled!

After being flooded out by the remnants of September’s hurricane and tropical storm, the Lupus Foundation of America has officially re-scheduled the Arizona Walk to End Lupus Now!

The event will be held on Sunday afternoon November 16th, at the same location it was originally planned:  Scottsdale Center for the Arts, 75th and Main Streets, Scottsdale, Arizona.  Registration will begin at 3pm, and the walk will start at 4pm.

If you want to register for the Arizona Walk to End Lupus Now, please visit the updated website new event date and information.  You can sign up new teams or new team members, submit online donations or team fundraising dollars online at

Please join the fight against lupus!

If you are a reader who would like to help, please sign up with me as a virtual walker, and join Toni Grimes’ team like I did.  My previous commitments keep me from being able to attend the walk on the new date, but I am going to participate in-absentia.  You could do this too!  Even if you cannot go the to an actual walk location, or cannot walk the physical course, you can still be a virtual walker in our Arizona event or in a walk event in your community.  Just make sure that people you ask to donate know that you are not going to attend or if you are not physically walking!

I almost forgot the butterfly! Added in a post update…

Or, perhaps it would be awesome if you could make a small donation to support Lupus Adventurer for my virtual walk effort, or my team as a group.  Donations can be made online, or checks may be mailed with a donation form ( click here ) to:  Lupus Foundation of America, Attn: Walk to End Lupus Now – Arizona, 2000 L Street, NW Suite #410, Washington, DC 20036.

Walkers that raise at least $100 are eligible for some great incentive gifts that LFA will provide to walkers either at or after the event.  Last year, my husband and I received T-Shirts and an amazing golf umbrella!  As of this weekend, Arizona Walk to End Lupus Now has received over $64,000 toward the 2014 goal of $100,000.

Walk to End Lupus Now™

The Arizona 2014 Walk event has been postponed from May 3, 2014 to September 27, 2014 at Sunset (more to follow) and the location is also changed to a new venue, Scottsdale Center for the Arts on September 27th.

It is a beautiful and interesting venue in which to walk and will enrich our event greatly.  Last year’s Walk was phenomenal and we had over 600 Walkers – so we are looking forward to an even larger event this September.

We truly hope you will join us for this signature LFA event!!

This spring and fall, similar walks are taking place in cities all across America.  To find out more about the many other LFA Walk to End Lupus Now™ activities, visit

You can find out if there will be a walk in your area, and sign up for that walk as a real or virtual walker, and even organize your own walk team.

Patient Symposium

Due to postponing the Walk, the Lupus Foundation of America wants to offer another important program for our Arizona constituents, so we have put together a Patient Education Symposium for Saturday May 10th at the Marriott Phoenix Airport Hotel on 1101 North 44th St., Phoenix 85008.

This hotel is centrally located  off 44th North, just past Freeway 202, We have reserved the Yuma Room from 9 AM – 12 Noon and will be having the LFA Medical Director, Dr. Joan Merrill and our former Board Chair and Lupus Survivor (and motivational speaker and national consultant), Cindy Coney as the two main presenters.

We are working on securing a registered dietician/nutritionist and a wellness professional to round out the program.  This program is free and we hope that you will join us.

Meet Toni Grimes, an amazing Arizona lupus warrior

Toni Grimes, Lupus Patient

It is my special pleasure to introduce you to a beautiful woman with a matching soul, Toni Grimes.  She is, in my opinion, the foremost lupus advocate and warrior in Arizona.  If you could meet her personally, after just a few minutes of pleasant and positive conversation, you would quickly begin to understand what an amazing person she is!

May 3, 2014 Scottsdale, AZ

5-3-14 Scottsdale, AZ

After many wonderful opportunities to meet and talk with Toni, and observing her tireless leadership in local Lupus Foundation of America (LFA) activities here in Arizona, I am impressed. She is creative, energetic and makes things “happen.”   Toni’s volunteer work was absolutely critical to the success of our local Walk to End Lupus Now last year, and is the walk chair again for our upcoming walk in Scottsdale, Arizona on May 3, 2014.

The reporter that recently interviewed Toni for a local newspaper, wrote about the impact lupus has had on Toni’s life, and a bit about how Toni fights back against the negative aspects of lupus.   Toni served for 17 years in the military until suddenly being diagnosed with systemic lupus.  She retired after a collapsed lung and lupus nephritis sidelined her from service in Afghanistan.  She now works as a local Lupus Foundation of America support group facilitator, and is an active advocate for female veterans and a personal trainer for people with disabilities.

I heartily recommend Shelby Slade’s article about Toni.  Shelby is a student at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and is now an intern at the Mesa Tribune in Arizona. She should be congratulated for her great job of research and conveying Toni Grimes’ encouraging story.

I think you may want to share Toni’s story with your own circle of contacts in the lupus community…

I am extremely excited to announce that on April 27th, the Lupus Foundation of America, Arizona Chapter and the City of Scottsdale, Arizona are sponsoring the  Arizona 2013 Walk to End Lupus Now™.  This spring, all over America and the world, local communities are holding their own Walk to End Lupus Now™ in an annual fund-raising campaign to support the Lupus Foundation of America.

Would you join Lupus Adventurer’s Walk Team?

My team’s goal is to raise $500.00

I would be extremely honored if each one of my readers would consider supporting the Walk to End Lupus Now™ in any of these four ways.  Would you please consider supporting me and my team?

1. Sign up to join my walk team as a walker if you live in Arizona and can come out on the day of the walk.  I would love to meet you!!

You have probably noticed that my identity is a careful mystery here on my blog, out of necessity for internet security reasons.  However, the Lupus Foundation of America Arizona and National offices staff know my true identity.  If you are able to join my team and you can come out on the day of the walk, I would be honored to meet and get to know you personally on the day of the walk.

How could you support us?

2. Sign up to join my walk team as a virtual walker, and get supporters to sponsor you or simply make a modest donation.

3. Sign up to sponsor me for the walk – Although I am unable to physically walk due to lupus arthritis and sun sensitivity, in my “virtual walker” role I will be busy supervising the walk registration booth. Supporters can sponsor me personally at  I will collect no money myself.  All donations supporting me or my team can be made directly online for the Lupus Foundation of America.

Join my walk team as an enthusiastic member of our cheering team, and encourage my team with your comments here or on my Lupus Adventurer Virtual Walkers Team Page.  I know everyone cannot support us with money.  However, your encouragement and prayer support for the safety of the lupus patients, and their friends and family who come out on the day of the walk would be simply awesome!

AZ Lupus Walk Home Page PixWhy have a 2013 Walk to End Lupus Now™?

The purpose of the 2013 Walk to End Lupus Now™ is to raise funds for the Lupus Foundation of America (LFA).  The Arizona walk goal is to raise $50,000 for the 90,000 people living with lupus in the Arizona area. Your donation will help me reach my personal fundraising goal of $500, and I hope that you’ll help me reach this goal!  I realize these are tough times for many people, but every bit helps!!  Separate small donations together would be enough to make a difference.

Lupus Now Lupus Adventurer Team Page 2013Join the Lupus Foundation of America and thousands of walkers in nearly 60 cities across the nation to raise money for lupus research, increase awareness of lupus, and rally public support for the estimated 1.5 million Americans who suffer from its brutal impact.
